Fri, 09 Dec 2016 10:09:25 +0100 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/94/15/Natural-Stone-Awards-2016---Landscaping-Category-Winner/ It is with delight that Burlington Stone’s Westmorland Green flamed paving has won the Landscaping Category at this year’s Natural Stone Awards 2016.  Working together with Hardscape, based in Bolton, Burlington Stone supplied their Green natural stone for an integral part of the refurbishment of the Deansgate – Castlefield Metro Station project in Manchester.

]]>
Burlington Stone extracted the green natural stone used on this particular project from their quarries, located in the heart of the English Lake District.  The stone’s unique properties have been formed deep within the Cumbrian Fells over 450 million years– so it’s dramatic, beautiful and made to last.  Therefore with a project brief to create a distinctive green setting for the stop, the unique technical characteristics and its distinctive colour patterns, Burlington’s green paving was a natural choice.

]]>
As part of the Holker Group of companies, Burlington Stone has a strong environmental ethos and endeavours to work sensitively within their natural surroundings. The Council accepted measures proposed by the company to mitigate the environmental impact of the development work at the quarry site.

Well known across both the national and international marketplace, Burlington’s unique stone products used in roofing, architectural, cladding and landscaping applications will now be available for many years to come.

Duncan Peake, CEO of the Holker Group, commented, “This is a hugely positive result for Burlington Stone, and we are now in a position to commence our ambitious development plan for the business.  We hope to see many future iconic buildings adorned with Burlington’s range of luxurious and signature British natural stone products”.

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 13:53:46 +0200 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/80/15/Holker-Group-join-the-Go-Herdwick-flock-with-Burly/ A number of Lake District businesses and organisations have pledged their support in aid of the ‘Go Herdwick’ public art trail, recently launched by the Lake District Calvert Trust charity who aims to raise £1.3million through the initiative for their 40th anniversary fundraising campaign.  The Holker Group sponsored one of the 60 Herdwick Ewes, each designed and painted by a local artist and put on display in public places and outside business premises between Keswick and Windermere in the Lake District.  The idea is for visitors and indeed local people to go ‘Herdy spotting’ and follow the Herdwick Trail by purchasing one of the maps available in local shops and tourist centres.  The flock was ‘released’ on Good Friday, 25th March and will remain in-situ until September when they will be rounded up for a public viewing and subsequent auction in the autumn.

]]>
The installations are already causing quite a stir, with interest growing daily through photo sharing on social media, as well as regional and national press coverage.   For the Holker Group, investing in the scheme offered an opportunity to not only support the wonderful work of a local charity, but also to invest in local communities.  It is hoped that the scheme will help to drive tourist footfall to the county, after what has been a difficult time for many businesses and residents after last year’s devastating floods.

The Holker Group ewe named ‘Burly’ after the natural Lake District stone quarried by Holker enterprise, Burlington Slate Limited, depicts a dry stone wall as commonly found across the Lakeland fells, home to the Herdwicks.  Lionel Playford, the artist who decorated the Herdwick statue thought up the idea of a ‘drystone Herdwick’ because of the natural fit between landscape and animal.  Lionel commented “It was important to make the stones realistic... I built Burly from the feet up as if I was a waller”.

To take part in the Go Herdwick trail, details of where maps and memorabilia can be purchased is available on www.goherdwick.co.uk .  Lastly, if you happen to spot Burly – take a selfie and share it with us on our twitter page @Holkergroup

Application for Slate Quarry Extension at Kirkby in Furness http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/78/15/Application-for-Slate-Quarry-Extension-at-Kirkby-in-Furness/ Tue, 15 Dec 2015 10:14:05 +0100 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/78/15/Application-for-Slate-Quarry-Extension-at-Kirkby-in-Furness/ Development proposals are underway to extend the lifespan of the existing slate quarry at Kirkby and restore the surrounding areas.

Burlington Slate Ltd intends to submit a planning application to Cumbria County Council to extend the existing slate quarry at Kirkby in Furness.  If the application is successful the extension will involve expanding the quarry in a southerly direction into Kirkby Moor.

Burlington Stone have over 170 years of quarrying history at the Cumbrian Quarry, and it is anticipated that the development programme will extend the life of the Quarry by some 40-50 years.  The Kirkby Quarry produces a vernacular roofing slate, walling stone and architectural stone which is used on many local, historic and traditional buildings.

Six phases of slate extraction and tipping are planned followed by final restoration, and will encompass deepening the Quarry by 55m and laterally extending the Quarry by 3.2ha.  A total of 6.5- 7 million cubic metres of rock and overburden material will be extracted from the void. This material will be used to progressively restore the site, starting with the infilling of the old Winnow End Quarry.  At the same time, work will be taken to infill and restore other areas surrounding the Kirkby Quarry site.

As part of the pre-application consultation process Burlington Slate Ltd will be engaging with the wider community about the proposals.  The visual impact is an important consideration and a landscape and visual assessment is currently being undertaken, as are Ecology and Habitat surveys.  As an important local employer in the area with 118 people employed at Kirkby Quarry with others in outlying quarries, this extension will secure the future of employment at the site.

Planning permission for the development will be sought by means of two separate applications, the first to deal with the quarry extension, and the second will deal with the restoration of the Old Winnow End Quarry.

Fri, 06 Jun 2014 17:42:50 +0200 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/60/15/Large-Gold-at-Holker-Garden-Festival-2014/ Burlington Stone was delighted to win Large Gold at this year’s Holker Garden Festival from 30th May – 1st June 2014 with their showgarden, “Oasis”.  Once again, Burlington Stone’s showgarden and quarry scene created a lot of interest and led to a large number of enquiries about the stone on display.

]]>
A quarry scene from the Victorian ages was the backdrop to this year’s show garden from Burlington Stone.  Looking how stone was quarried and used in the production of roads, Old Hall Farm, Bouth, teamed up with Burlington Stone to demonstrate road laying from the olden days, using Burlington’s stone, quarried from their Baycliff limestone quarry.

The quarry scene naturally lead into how the quarried stone can be used in a formal context, to create a stunning and enjoyable garden, in keeping with Victorian times.  Re-creating a bygone era, the Victorian inspired garden joined together formal planting, living area and a water pool.  “Oasis” by Burlington Stone incorporated a limestone paving area allowing for outdoor living and dining, whilst overlooking the tranquillity of a gently flowing water feature and the beauty of planting reminiscent of the Victorian period.

Using both natural stones, limestones and slate, a combination of colours and textures complemented the planting to display how the garden can create an oasis for those enjoying living in its space.  The dining table and worktop made from 450 million year old Broughton Moor slate, defined the living and eating space and the water feature provided a sense of movement within the garden.  The garden can be used and enjoyed for late evening suppers and for moments of reflection at the end of the day.  The planting enhanced the area with the use of hedged parterres to enrich the appeal and tranquillity of the “Oasis”.

The team involved in the Garden Festival planning are now looking forward to start thinking about 2015!

Positively Stoke-on-Trent http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/58/15/Positively-Stoke-on-Trent/ Tue, 27 May 2014 14:31:57 +0200 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/58/15/Positively-Stoke-on-Trent/ Using Burlington Stone's Westmorland Green paving proposition within the pool area of the garden, a focal point for the design's vision was created.

The design represented a city with a new clarity of purpose and sources of energy. It drew on the city’s natural resources and plugs directly into the new dynamics.

The garden’s clear lines, circuits, solar panels and high-tech materials reflect the technological revolution. The glass pavilion reflects water, earth and air; the city’s emerging sustainable energy ambitions. The planting is inspired by nature’s re-colonisation of Stoke-on-Trent, reconnecting the city to nature and a cleaner and greener future.

Tue, 27 May 2014 14:26:44 +0200 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/57/15/Oasis-at-Holker-Garden-Festival-2014/ An exciting collaboration between Burlington Stone, and one of Cumbria’s newest visitor attractions, Old Hall Farm, Bouth will be showcased at this year’s Holker Garden Festival, from 30th May 2014 - 2nd June 2014 .  The two businesses have been working together for the past 3 months to plan what will be an impressive Victorian quarry scene display leading in to Burlington’s 2014 festival show garden.

]]>
Nick Williams, commercial director at Burlington Stone comments “Collaborating with Old Hall Farm creates a really unusual and unique way to not only stage our show garden, but to also showcase our stone from its natural form to a finished product.”

Side by side, Old Hall Farm and Burlington Stone will stage a quarry scene from the Victorian ages which will also be the back drop to Burlington’s 2014 show garden.  Looking at how stone was quarried and used in the production of roads; Old Hall Farm will demonstrate road laying from the olden days, using stone quarried from Burlington’s Baycliff limestone quarry.

This scene will naturally lead into the garden to show how the quarried stone can be used in a formal context, creating a stunning and enjoyable garden, in keeping with Victorian times.  Re-creating a bygone era, the Victorian inspired garden will join together formal planting, living area and a water pool.  Burlington’s garden, named ‘Oasis’ will incorporate a limestone paving area allowing for outdoor living and dining, whilst overlooking the tranquillity of a gently flowing water feature and the beauty of planting reminiscent of the Victorian period. A dining table and worktop made from 450 million year old Broughton Moor slate, will impressively define the living and eating space.

Old Hall Farm and its owners Alex and Charlotte Sharphouse were a big hit at last year’s show, giving visitors to the festival a glimpse of 19th century, working farm life. This year’s quarrying scene aims to make just as much impact, with traditional machinery including a Ruston Bucyrus face shovel digging a lime stone quarry face. Whilst the 20 tonne steam roller works to compact a traditional stone road. An authentic workman’s living van would have been on-site accommodation for the men as they work away from home.

Alex Sharphouse comments “We had great feedback from last year’s show and we’re really looking forward to our second festival.  We hope to show visitors something a little different with our display and showcase just a small part of Old Hall Farm’s historic collection.”

]]>
Opening its doors in June 2013, the hotel has reinvented luxury stay.  All elements of the project focussed upon creating the ultimate in luxury for every guests stay, and at the same time, meeting a brief to ensure that Brimstone is as sustainable and energy efficient as possible.

Therefore it was a natural decision to source, where possible, building materials locally.  Hence all stone walling, roofing slates, slate copings and internal slate finishes were acquired from Burlington’s Elterwater quarry, less that half a mile from the site.  The natural beauty of Burlington’s stone, which was laid down in the very near vicinity to the project over 450 million years ago, creates a show stopping venue which is totally in keeping with its natural surroundings.

The Elterwater stone is not only an aesthetically pleasing, but its superior technical characteristics ensures the longevity of the building for many generations to come.

With a waterjet finish to the exterior main entrance, visitors and employees are met with a stunning selection of green paving which has greater anti-slip resistance, whilst still maintaining a crisp and honed appearance.  The natural markings of the stone are visible allowing the origins of the stone to be revealed.

The Bursting Stone waterjet finish is complemented around the edge with Bursting Stone in a flamed finish, which also offers a contrast in textures and again greater anti slip resistance.

The introduction of CE Marking on building products is taking place as part of the continuing efforts of Europe to harmonise standards to ensure a level playing field is achieved across countries in the European Union.  As a result, all stone masonry companies supplying the building industry will have to put CE marks on any finished stonework, which is produced to a European Standard.

The Natural Stone Specialist publication has issued the following CE Marking advise in an article dated 16th June 2013.  For full details, please follow the link below:

Burlington Stone thrilled to win Best Show Garden http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/29/15/Burlington-Stone-thrilled-to-win-Best-Show-Garden/ Mon, 03 Jun 2013 15:05:24 +0200 http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/29/15/Burlington-Stone-thrilled-to-win-Best-Show-Garden/ At this year’s Holker Garden Festival from 31st May – 2nd June, Burlington Stone were delighted to not only win “Large Gold” for their show garden “Metamorphosis” but they also won Best Festival Garden for the first time.

]]>
The garden represented the change achieved with natural stone, but also how individuals's styles change.  The large number of visitors to the Festival found they were able to envisage all or elements of the Burlington show garden within their own garden and the stone and planting generated a lot of interest.

Building on the success achieved at the Chelsea Flower Show a couple of weeks previously, Burlington Stone will continue to develop their Landscaping proposition and further details will be available through the website.

Now Burlington Stone can start planning next year’s garden to retain the title of “Best Festival Garden”.

Metamorphosis by Burlington Stone

This year, Burlington Stone’s garden is all about change.  Burlington will be showcasing the transformation of its natural raw stone into functional, hard wearing, yet at the same time, unique and signature landscaping products.

The garden will include a range of green slates, which were laid down in the English Lake District some 450 million years ago and which are metamorphic volcanic stones.  In the show garden, the centrepiece itself is a piece of metamorphic Broughton Moor stone in its natural state.  Like a common scene within Lake District fells, water trickles over the stone onto a river bed, which meanders through stone and vegetation.

On either side of the centre piece stone are paving and walled seating areas which use Westmorland Green and Cumbrian Black slate stone.  This is offered in riven finishes, using traditional technics that the company has employed for over 100 years.  Burlington's own product has also changed to meet the more modern demands of customers by demonstrating how a flamed finish is still able to complement the beauty and character of the material formed and offered by nature over 400 million years ago.

The two gardens either side of the centre piece also show traditional and contemporary styles to reflect equally how the same material can, complemented with beautiful planting, create different looks matching the often change in styles on a generation to generation basis of families.

Also incorporated into the Burlington design are choice pieces of lighting, supplied by Outdoor LEDs. Look closer and you will find lighting mounted in the ground, hidden in the foliage and in some cases, cycling through a variety of colours, perfectly accenting the surrounding stone features. Ensuring that your vision of the garden is clear and bright will be super-discrete Garden Spike Lights, each one specifically placed to bring quality illumination and grab attention to the many beautiful features of this garden.

]]>
Using Broughton Moor stone in a flamed finish to the exterior cladding, the aim of the project to create a civic institution that would provide a safe, secure and lasting structure was achieved.  This project saw 21,000 square feet of the Broughton Moor slate being clad to the exterior of the courthouse.  With a further 10,500 square feet supplied in the interior public areas, Broughton Moor’s distinctive characteristics has been used as an identifying feature of the entry vestibules to the courtrooms and as a feature wall at the front of the courtrooms.

This hugely important civic building needs to stand the test of time, and durability was a key criteria in the stone selection process.  Thanks to Broughton Moor’s exceptional aesthetic and technical attributes, it makes an ideal solution for large projects throughout the world.

The US’ Building Stone Magazine has recently run an article about the project, which can be read at http://www.stoneworld.com/articles/87486-stone-creates-a-presence-for-durham-courthouse?v=preview

Working with the Architects, O’Brien/Atkins Associates, Durham County Justice Building will be a sign of Burlington’s attention to detail when supplying large projects with exacting standards.

]]>
Organised by the Stone Federation of Great Britain, the Award Ceremony was held on Friday 30th November at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The 3 projects to win awards were:

Kendal College

Using a variety of different natural stones, quarried from the heart of the British Lake District, and different finishes, the exterior of the building has achieved a unique look.  The aim of the project was to create a contemporary building with a conservation area, which would not only enhance the visual character of its surroundings but also provide an accessible, inclusive and comfortable building for the students to learn in.

Rigg Beck

Both the internal and external aspects of the building have natural stone included.  The beautiful British roofing slate, synonymous with the Lake District, allows the building to blend in with its natural surroundings, whilst by using different finishes, a modern and contemporary feel can be achieved on the inside.

Apple Tree at Hereford Cathedral

Using Kirkstone Sea Green slate with a flamed finish, an “Apple Tree” mosaic has been designed outside the west front of Hereford Cathedral.  British natural stone was chosen due to its hardwearing surface and its ability to withstand adverse weather conditions, high volume of footfall and vehicular traffic.

“These awards signify Burlington Stone’s continued commitment to offering a diverse range of luxurious and signature British natural stone products” states Nick Williams, Commercial Director at Burlington Stone.  Burlington’s products have been engineered and processed by skilled British craftsmen with experience passed down through the generations for nearly 175 years to ensure the ultimate interior and exterior finishing statement.

The 450 million year old piece of slate from Burlington’s Broughton Moor quarry, was surrounded by complementary green and grey shades of natural stone tiles and mosaics under the water.

The exciting new mosaic range from Burlington Stone was also showcased with a mosaic-clad structure, incorporating a “letter box mouth”, which allowed a sheet of water to cascade down into the pool surrounding the slate island.  The green lushness of the planting ensured the garden truly became a haven for tranquillity and where your imagination was allowed to wander.

In addition, with the discreet LED lighting from Marl International, the garden took on a different dimension at dusk.

Already we are now starting to think about next year!]]>

Burlington Stone, which was established in 1843, pre dates the Furness railway by 3 years.  This railway, which was intended principally for mineral traffic (slate and iron ore), and extended from Kirkby in Furness to Dalton-in-Furness, later extended to Rampside and Barrow.

As such Burlington Stone’s history and success is interlinked with the growth of the railways, allowing the slate from the quarries to be offered to customers further afield, and today Burlington Stone’s range of luxurious and signature natural British Stone is sold throughout the world to customers, who are inspired by the finest quality stone products, crafted by skilled and talented craftsmen with nearly 175 years of experience.]]>

BBC i-PLAYER NOW SHOWING THEIR VISIT TO BURLINGTON STONE ON GREAT BRITISH RAILWAY JOURNEYS http://www.burlingtonstone.co.uk/news/5/15/BBC-i-PLAYER-NOW-SHOWING-THEIR-VISIT-TO-BURLINGTON-STONE-ON-GREAT-BRITISH-RAILWAY-JOURNEYS/ TV presenter, journalist and former conservative politician and Cabinet Minister, Michael Portillo made a fascinating tour of local natural stone producer, Burlington Stone of Kirkby-in-Furness last night on BBC2 at 6.30pm, as part of series three of the BBC’s popular... Centering on the long journey from Berwick-Upon-Tweed to the Isle of Man, the programme called into Burlington to explore cartographer, George Bradshaw’s reference to Kirkby ‘Roundheads’ within his Victorian guide of 1840, the Railway Companion.

In addition to it being a name given to local residents born in the Parish of Kirkby Ireleth, ‘Roundheads’ is the traditional practice of rounding off the top of roofing slates. So who better to provide a demonstration of the technique than highly-skilled rivers at Burlington? As well as being the UK’s leading producer of natural slate roofing, the company was formed at the time Bradshaw published his guide, which was the first comprehensive timetable and travel guide of the railway system in Great Britain.

Following a visit to Burlington’s blue/grey Kirkby quarry and clog bank, Michael Portillo paid a visit to Burlington’s blue-grey roofing production shed where roofing charge hand, John Earl of Broughton-in-Furness was on hand to show Michael Portillo how to create a ‘Roundhead’ through a technique known as ‘dressing.’ Undeterred by the process, and armed with whittle and brake, the tools required to dress a slate, the popular TV producer gained first hand experience of what is a time-honoured tradition within the slate industry.

As Burlington Stone’s Managing Director, Rob Irwin commented: “Despite the process being far more difficult than it looks, Michael did a brilliant job of dressing his first blue/grey slate and he appeared to be extremely engrossed not just in the subject of ‘Roundheads’, but Burlington and slate quarrying as a whole. Burlington has a long history and heritage that coincides with the period covered by the series, so it was a pleasure to welcome him and his team to the quarry at Kirkby,” he added.

If you missed this fantastic insight into Burlington Stone’s past and present or just want to watch it again, it is now available through the BBC i-Player using the link below:
